Microneedling is an advanced skin treatment that’s becoming increasingly popular for its ability to rejuvenate skin without invasive procedures. Ideal Image offers this treatment by licensed Medical Professionals and under the guidance of Dr. Tara Margarella, Chief Medical Officer at Ideal Image. During a recent interview, Dr. Margarella shared expert insights about microneedling, providing valuable information about how it works, who it’s for, and how it benefits your skin.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. This process stimulates the body’s natural wound-healing response, triggering the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins that keep your skin firm and smooth.

According to Dr. Margarella, “Microneedling is a fantastic option for addressing a wide range of skin concerns, from fine lines and wrinkles to acne scars. It works by harnessing the body’s natural healing process, making it a great alternative to more invasive treatments.”

The treatment is safe for most skin types and can be performed on various areas of the body, including the face, neck, and chest. While it’s most commonly used to improve skin texture and reduce scars, it can also help with skin tone and large pores.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling involves the use of a device with tiny, sterile needles that puncture the skin’s surface. Dr. Margarella explains that the purpose of these micro-injuries is to “stimulate the body’s production of collagen and elastin, both of which are crucial for maintaining the skin’s structural integrity.”

During the treatment, the needles create small, controlled injuries to the skin’s surface. These micro-injuries are tiny enough that they heal quickly with no damage or scarring, but they prompt the body to increase collagen production in the treated area. “Collagen is essential for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity, and it diminishes as we age,” says Dr. Margarella. “Microneedling helps restore some of that collagen to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and ease the appearance of scars.”

Benefits of Microneedling

Dr. Margarella emphasizes that microneedling is one of the most versatile skin treatments available. “The great thing about microneedling is that it works for a variety of skin concerns. Whether you’re looking to smooth the appearance of acne scars, reduce the appearance of fine lines, or even out your skin tone, microneedling is a great option.”

Some of the key benefits include:

  • Improving skin texture: Microneedling helps to smooth out rough or uneven skin texture by encouraging new collagen growth.
  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles: The boost in collagen production provides structure to the skin to aid in diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time.
  • Minimizing scars: It’s particularly effective at softening the appearance of acne scars and other types of scarring.
  • Shrinking pores: Enlarged pores can become less visible as the skin tightens with new collagen production.
  • Brightening skin tone: Microneedling can help to break up hyperpigmentation giving the skin a more even, radiant tone.

Dr. Margarella notes that Ideal Image uses medical-grade devices, which allow for deeper penetration and more effective results than what you’d get from at-home treatments. “When done by professionals, microneedling penetrates deeper layers of the skin and delivers better, more consistent, lasting results,” she explains.

Who Is Microneedling For?

Microneedling is an excellent option for people of all ages who want to address skin concerns like texture, scarring, and fine lines. Dr. Margarella points out that “it’s great for a wide range of ages because it can be used to address existing skin issues or as a preventative measure to maintain youthful skin.”

The treatment is safe for all skin tones, and its non-invasive nature makes it suitable for individuals looking for minimal downtime. However, microneedling is not recommended for people with active skin infections, open wounds, bleeding disorders, or certain skin conditions like eczema.

What to Expect During a Microneedling Session

Microneedling sessions at Ideal Image typically take about 50 minutes, including numbing time, depending on the area being treated. A topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to minimize discomfort during the treatment.

“The sensation during microneedling is often described as a slight tingling or prickling feeling, but it’s generally well-tolerated thanks to the topical numbing agent applied prior to treatment,” says Dr. Margarella. After the treatment, most clients experience redness and mild swelling, similar to a sunburn, which subsides within a few days.

For optimal results, Dr. Margarella states that a series of treatments are necessary. “We offer a series of three or six treatments spaced four weeks apart. This allows your skin enough time to heal between sessions and for the collagen induction process to be ignited and to build,” she advises.

Post-Treatment Care and Results

Immediately after the treatment, Ideal Image advises clients to follow specific aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing. According to the post-treatment guide, it’s essential to avoid all sun exposure and apply only products given to the client by the medical provider for the first 24 hours.

Dr. Margarella emphasizes the importance of following these guidelines closely. “Your skin will be more sensitive after microneedling, and the microchannels that remain open will allow access to deeper layers of the skin so it’s imperative to limit the products applied for the first 24 hours. After that time it is essential to keep the skin hydrated and nourished while avoiding harsh chemicals and exfoliants for at least a few days. Avoiding the sun and diligently applying sunscreen is crucial as the risk for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can increase with sun exposure during this period.”

Clients can expect to see initial improvements within a few days, with full results developing over several weeks. “As the collagen builds over time, your skin will become firmer, smoother, and more radiant,” says Dr. Margarella. Depending on the individual’s skin concerns, at least 3 sessions are necessary with more significant issues like acne scarring, sun damage, and wrinkles requiring more treatments.

Combining Microneedling with Other Treatments

For clients seeking enhanced results, Dr. Margarella often recommends combining microneedling with other aesthetic treatments. “One of the great things about microneedling is that it works beautifully alongside other treatments like chemical peels or injectables, as part of a healthy skin regimen” she explains. By combining treatments as part of an aesthetic care plan, clients can address multiple skin concerns,  achieving more comprehensive results and getting clients closer to optimum outcomes.

Ideal Image also recommends pairing microneedling with medical-grade skincare products. After microneedling, skincare that boosts collagen production and nourishes the skin can enhance and maintain the results of treatment. Good medical-grade skincare can act as an “insurance policy” for the treatments being performed.
